A site built with a strong visual presence helps provide information in an understandable way. With that being said, let’s take a look at the are suppressors legal in nc that apply in the state of North Carolina.

The state of North Carolina has a somewhat convoluted restraining order against the possession of firearm suppressors. All firearm suppressors were banned back in 1903, however the ban on suppressors was repealed in the year 2013. If you are unfamiliar with what a suppressor is, or why firearm suppressors are illegal, I will tell you briefly about them afterward. Firearm suppressors reduce the noise that firearms make upon exiting the cartridge, making them quieter. As a result, they are somewhat of a safety hazard because the cartridges used with firearm suppressors can be discharged without alerting most people nearby.

With regard to suppressors, the state of North Carolina has strict laws regarding the scope of what can be considered a suppressor. According to the North Carolina General Statutes Chapter 14, Article 19a, firearm suppressors are defined as “a silencer or muffler for a firearm or any part or combination of parts designed to muffle the sound of a firearm.” And, when it comes to the possession of suppressors, the state of North Carolina law is not very clear on the matter. The law states that a person may possess a suppressor under certain circumstances if your local sheriff has issued a permit for you to use a suppressor. However, North Carolina law also states that you may not sell suppressors. Because of how broad the definition of suppressors is, it is not clear if you can even purchase or sell suppressors to those who hold a permit in North Carolina.

Keep in mind that suppressors are not made for those who have bad hearing or those who simply want to “think of the neighbors”. Suppressors can be used to commit a crime had the victim not heard or seen the crime being committed upon them. As a result, many states restrict the use of suppressors to those who meet certain requirements. The state of North Carolina has suppressed the use of suppressors unless you have a permit that is issued by your local sheriff.

For more information on suppressors, it is important to refer to your local sheriff or hire a local attorney that can provide you information regarding suppressors. You will need a special permit to use or possess suppressors at all, unless your local sheriff denies you the ability to obtain one. Check with your local sheriff for more information.
